LOOK INSIDE

What is actually
inside a humanoid?

Take a look inside a robot: split the DR02 Pro into its segments, X-ray it or cut it open. It is based on the manufacturer's official 3D simulation model – with the real joint positions, torques and ranges of motion.

How a joint actuator is built

The joints are moved by drives. Deep Robotics describes its separately sold joint modules like this: gearbox, frameless torque motor, servo driver and absolute encoder in one housing. That is exactly the principle shown here.

Schematic illustration, not an original part. The manufacturer has not published which drives are fitted in the DR02.

Stator with copper winding

Current through the coils creates a rotating magnetic field.

Rotor with magnets

Follows the field and spins – fast, but with little force.

Planetary gearbox

Turns fast rotation into slow, powerful motion. 4 : 1 in this drawing – real drives use other ratios depending on design.

Ring gear

The fixed toothed ring the planet gears roll along.

Output bearing

Takes the loads from arm or leg so motor and gearbox are relieved.

Output flange

This is where the next segment is bolted on – the thigh at the hip, the forearm at the elbow.

Encoder

Measures the joint angle. Deep Robotics' separately sold modules use 14- to 17-bit encoders: 16,384 to 131,072 steps per revolution.

Motor driver

Controls the current and thus the force in the joint – up to 1,000 times per second on the J60 module, according to the manufacturer.

Sealed housing

According to the manufacturer, the DR02 is dust-tight and protected against water jets (IP66). The joints have to be sealed for that too.

What is known – and what is not

We only show what is documented. Everything schematic is labelled as such.

Documented

  • Joints, torques, ranges of motion, masses: from the official simulation model by DeepRoboticsLab (BSD-3-Clause licence)
  • IP66 protection, operating range −20 °C to 55 °C
  • Up to 275 TOPS computing power – with a dedicated AI processor on the DR02 Pro
  • Sensors: LiDAR and wide-angle camera, plus three depth cameras on the DR02 Pro – on the head and on the front and back of the torso according to the manufacturer's model
  • Payload: 10 kg with both arms, 20 kg carried on the body
Sources: Deep Robotics website and data sheet, and the official simulation model

Not published

  • which motors and gearboxes are fitted in the joints
  • where battery and computer sit inside the body
  • which computer chip is used
  • how the cables are routed through the joints
That is why these parts are not shown in the model – honest rather than made up.
